Migratory Notes: New York City Edition 1 explores migration as a fundamentally communal condition shaped not only by movement, but by gathering, exchange, and shared experience.
Set within the context of New York City, where more than a third of residents are foreign-born, the project approaches migration through its lived, everyday forms: food, sound, drink, scent, and social interaction. Rather than representing migration visually, the work activates it through conviviality – inviting audiences to eat, drink, and listen together as a way of encountering the city’s layered diasporas.
At its center is a bespoke gin conceived by the artist and developed with Forthave Spirits, whose botanicals trace global migration routes. Cocktails by Natasha J. David and food by Joon Eats are realized within the project’s conceptual framework, alongside an artist-curated playlist, bringing diverse cultural trajectories into a shared sensory space.
Through this collective experience, Migratory Notes reframes migration as a generative force, one that produces community through encounter and transforms difference into relation.
